DIRECTOR P&P VISITS BUS TERMINALS IN ACCRA

published: Sept. 29, 2022, 1:55 p.m.

Ing. David Osafo Adonteng the Director of the Planning and Programmes [P&P] Directorate of the Authority paid working visits to the 2M Express and VIP Transport Service at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra on Tuesday, 21st December, 2021.

The P&P Director who was in the company of Henry Asomani [Senior Manager, P&P] and Pearl Adusu [Head, Public Relations], saw the need to visit these terminals after receiving numerous complaints from the general public with regards to their dangerous driving on our highways.

The complaints, which included speeding and wrongful overtaking, had come from various sections, including the media – on GTV’s Adult Education. Interacting with Nana Poku [Manager at the 2M Express], Ing. Adonteng interrogated the driver training regime of the transport operator. He inquired further if there was a way 2M Express was able to monitor drivers of their buses, cautioning that bad driving behavior could result in imprisonment of not less than 6 months.

Mr. Poku in his defense stated that when the complaints about the reckless driving of the Toyota HiAce mini buses entered the social media space, the general public assumed they were 2M Express buses just because they exclusively use such buses. In responding to the queries, the 2M Express manager revealed that their drivers did in fact go through training, as well as their vehicles monitored, when in motion. He mentioned that, any driver that went beyond 120km/h was sanctioned.

Ing. Adonteng lauded the tracking of their vehicles, but was quick to draw the attention of Mr. Poku to the fact that a bus in transit on the highway had no business going beyond the 90km/h speed limit, insisting that the highest a driver could go was 100km/h, on the Accra-Tema motorway. He therefore recommended they moved a step further to install speed limiters on their vehicles to ensure their drivers travel within the posted speed limits.

Ing. Adonteng and his team later met with some drivers of 2M Express who expressed their appreciation for the visit and revealed that sometimes it was their passengers who encouraged them to speed, so they could reach their destinations faster.

From the 2M Express, the Director for Planning and Programmes paid a visit to the VIP Transport Service where he met with the Road Safety Officer of the yard.
