NRSA DEVELOPS ROAD SAFETY CODE FOR POLITICAL PARTIES AHEAD OF THE 2024 ELECTIONS
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has engaged representatives of political parties to deliberate on measures to curb road crashes and reduce fatalities ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections. The NRSA called the meeting to seek their input and contributions to the code of practice for political activities which is a blueprint to manage road safety during political activities
Data available to the NRSA indicates that the country records high road crashes during election periods as political actors go around the country to conduct campaigns. The rush to get to their various destinations to engage voters makes political actors forget road safety regulations leading to crashes.
The goal of engagement is to reduce Crashes, Injuries, and Deaths (CIDs) in the country during the election seasons especially when the NRSA has targeted fatalities of less than 2000 in 2024.
Representatives of all the political parties were present during the meeting and made significant inputs in the production of the Code.
The Authority has over the years observed many infractions or increased thereof; during the campaign season such as people climbing the top of vehicles, over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, riding without helmets, motorbike stunts, and unnecessary touting of horns which distracts other road users, fatigue driving etc.
